Strategic Zoning Shifts in Bida Federal Constituency

The political landscape of Niger State’s Bida/Katcha/Gbako Federal Constituency is facing a significant realignment following a decisive resolution by local elders. During a stakeholders’ interface meeting held in Minna, the Elders’ Forum of Katcha and Gbako Local Government Areas formally agreed to rotate the House of Representatives seat. Alhaji Abubakar Katcha, chairman of the Katcha Concerned Stakeholders Forum, announced that the constituency’s representation for the 2027 elections must originate from either Katcha or Gbako. This move is designed to shift power away from Bida Local Government Area, which has held the seat for the majority of the recent political cycle.

Opposition to the Incumbent’s Third-Term Ambitions

The resolution serves as a direct challenge to the third-term aspirations of the current member, Hon. Saidu Musa Abdul. Having already served two terms in office, Abdul, who represents the Bida Local Government Area, now faces a formal blockade from influential local power brokers. The elders’ decision suggests a lack of support for an extended tenure, emphasizing that the current political arrangement has reached its natural conclusion. By establishing this new zoning mandate, the forum aims to prevent a single locality from maintaining a long-term monopoly over the federal seat.

Arguments for Regional Equity and Inclusivity

Members of the forum, including Mohammed Dangana Kudogi, framed the decision as a necessity for maintaining peace and stability within the All Progressives Congress. The elders argued that a commitment to fairness, justice, and equity requires a more inclusive approach to political appointments and elective offices. They pointed out that while Bida has occupied the federal legislative seat for over 16 years, the other two local government areas in the constituency have seen significantly less representation. This imbalance, according to the elders, necessitates a corrective measure to ensure every segment of the constituency feels a sense of belonging.
