Release Confirmed by Japanese Cabinet Secretary
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Minoru Kihara, confirmed during a Tuesday press conference that a Japanese national detained in Iran since January 20 was released on bail on Monday, April 6, 2026. Although the Japanese government officially withheld the individual's identity citing privacy, government sources and regional news agencies have identified the person as Shinnosuke (Shin) Kawashima, the Tehran bureau chief for NHK. Following his release, the Japanese ambassador to Iran met with Kawashima and confirmed he is in good health and currently under protection in Tehran.
Detention Context and Security Charges
Kawashima was originally arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in late January, a period marked by intense anti-government protests across Iran. He was initially held at a detention facility in northern Tehran before being transferred to Evin Prison, a facility notorious for housing political detainees and journalists. Iranian authorities have reportedly charged Kawashima with violating public security laws. These charges are linked to the broader security crackdown that has targeted numerous domestic and international media workers since the outbreak of civil unrest at the beginning of the year.
Diplomatic Efforts and Ongoing Legal Constraints
The release follows a high-level diplomatic intervention by Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday to demand the journalist's freedom. Despite his release from prison, Kawashima remains under a strict travel ban. Kyodo News reported that Iranian authorities have mandated that he remain in the country to stand trial, a process for which a date has not yet been set. Tokyo has explicitly urged Tehran to drop the travel restrictions and allow Kawashima to return home immediately.
