What is the "Super-K" Strain?
The Super-K variant is a subclade of the H3N2 influenza virus. While early data suggests it is not necessarily more severe than previous strains in terms of symptoms, it presents two major challenges:
Speed of Transmission: Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, reports that it spreads more rapidly than standard seasonal flu.
Vaccine Mismatch: In the Northern Hemisphere, the variant was less well-matched to existing vaccines, leading to higher infection rates.
The Good News for New Zealanders
Despite the threat, New Zealand may be better prepared than its Northern Hemisphere counterparts. Professor Peter McIntyre, head of Paediatrics and Child Health at Otago University, told Nine to Noon that the 2026 flu vaccine formulation includes a strain similar to Super-K.
