State Oversight Triggered by In-Custody Fatality
New York's highest legal office has intervened in a local death investigation following a fatal medical episode at the Binghamton Police Headquarters. Per state law, the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) must review any incident where a civilian dies during an encounter with law enforcement. The deceased, a 37 year old Binghamton resident, was pronounced dead at UHS Wilson Medical Center on Sunday, March 8, shortly after being discharged from a separate medical evaluation.
Initial Altercation and Bus Obstruction Incident
The sequence of events began on Saturday, March 7, near the intersection of West State and Chenango Streets. Binghamton Police report that officers responded to a man intentionally blocking an occupied Broome County Transit bus. Witnesses described erratic behavior as the individual allegedly climbed onto the front of the vehicle, leading to a confrontation with both passengers and responding officers. While police claim they successfully de-escalated the scene, the man reportedly resisted arrest, resulting in a knee injury to one of the officers involved.
Medical Evaluation and Sunday Morning Emergency
Following the arrest, the suspect was transported to Binghamton General Hospital for a psychiatric and physical evaluation. He remained under medical care overnight and was cleared for discharge on Sunday morning. However, the situation turned critical upon his arrival at police headquarters. Authorities state that while still in the parking area, the man began experiencing a severe medical emergency. Officers on the scene reportedly administered Narcan and performed chest compressions until EMS arrived to take over life-saving measures.
