The Role of Early Palliative Care as a Support Layer
A central pillar of the SUPPORT-D program is the early introduction of palliative care, a field often misunderstood as being synonymous with end-of-life hospice care. Unlike hospice, palliative care can begin at the moment of diagnosis and exist alongside curative treatments. It focuses on symptom management, emotional resilience, and informed decision-making. Dr. Layne, who personally navigated the complexities of dementia as a caregiver for her in-laws, noted that palliative care should be viewed as an extra layer of support rather than something to fear. Personalized Nursing and Structured Educational Frameworks
The SUPPORT-D curriculum is delivered through a blend of independent study and professional consultation. Participants utilize a specially designed educational booklet covering four primary domains: understanding the disease, patient self-care, caregiver wellness, and future planning. This structured course is supplemented by two virtual meetings with a nurse interventionist who helps personalize the strategies to the specific needs of each family.
