Statistical Correlation Between Daily Sugar Volume and Gallstone Odds
The research team utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) covering the period from 2017 to 2023. After adjusting for age, sex, and body mass index, the analysis showed that for every 100-gram increase in daily sugar, the risk of gallstones rose by 41%. When participants were divided into quartiles based on their consumption, those in the highest intake group faced an 82% higher risk compared to those in the lowest group. These figures highlight a stark dose-response relationship, suggesting that even moderate reductions in daily sugar could have a meaningful impact on reducing the occurrence of gallbladder disease across the general population.
The Biological Mechanisms of Sugar Induced Gallstone Formation
High sugar intake is thought to promote the formation of gallstones by fundamentally altering the chemical composition of bile. Excessive sugar consumption spikes blood glucose and insulin levels, which in turn stimulates the liver to produce more cholesterol. When this surplus cholesterol is secreted into the gallbladder, the bile becomes supersaturated, leading to the formation of crystals that eventually harden into stones.
