Market Leaders Under Regulatory Pressure
The FCC’s recent order banning foreign-made Wi-Fi routers has placed several of the most popular networking brands in the US on high alert. According to a report by Ookla utilizing Speedtest.net data, the impact will be widespread, affecting nearly every tier of the consumer market. While Amazon-owned Eero narrowly leads the US market with a 10% share, TP-Link follows closely in second at 9.9%. TP-Link, in particular, has been a focal point for lawmakers who argue the company’s Chinese affiliations pose potential "supply chain vulnerabilities" and cybersecurity risks.
Vulnerabilities in the Current Router Landscape
The ban arrives amid heightened security warnings from Microsoft and the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). Intelligence suggests Russian state-sponsored hackers have actively targeted vulnerable consumer routers, including at least 23 TP-Link models. This risk is exacerbated by the sheer number of older devices still in use; Ookla’s data indicates that 28% of US speed test samples are still running on Wi-Fi 5 (released in 2013), and 7% remain on Wi-Fi 4 or older. These aging units often lack modern security protocols, making the FCC's mandate for US-based manufacturing a central pillar of the White House’s national security strategy.
Key ISP Suppliers Face Production Hurdles
The regulatory move also targets the "hidden" manufacturers that supply major US Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
