The Logistics of the "Break"
The stolen cargo was part of a major regional distribution effort intended to supply retailers across Europe. According to Nestlé, the shipment vanished shortly after departing the Italian production site. The total volume of 12 tons represents nearly half a million chocolate wafer bars, making it one of the largest confectionery thefts in recent years.
As of late March, neither the transport vehicle nor the stolen goods have been recovered. Nestlé, headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, has alerted authorities across multiple borders, as the nature of the theft suggests a highly coordinated criminal operation capable of diverting large-scale freight.
Tracking the Stolen Goods
To combat the sale of these items through unofficial or "gray market" channels, Nestlé has implemented a digital tracking strategy.
Batch Coding: Every individual bar carries a unique batch code assigned at the time of production.
