Public Rejection of a Former Beneficiary’s Appeal
Nelson Havi, the former president of the Law Society of Kenya, has ignited a digital firestorm after sharing screenshots of a WhatsApp exchange with a student he once financially assisted. The student, identified as Wasike, reached out to Havi to express gratitude for past help with school fees before inviting the senior counsel to be the guest of honor at a fundraiser for Kingdom Word Church in Kangemi. Havi’s response was immediate and dismissive, stating that building more churches is not currently a developmental necessity.
Prioritizing Public Infrastructure over Religious Renovation
In his characteristic directness, Havi leveraged the private request to articulate his political and social agenda for the Westlands sub-county. He informed the student that he would not be contributing to the renovation of the 100-member congregation’s premises, arguing that Westlands and the country at large have more pressing needs. According to Havi, resources should be directed toward the construction of schools, hospitals, industries, and roads rather than expanding religious institutions.
The "Opium of the Masses" Critique
Taking the conversation to Facebook, Havi escalated the matter by invoking Karl Marx’s famous description of religion as the "opium of the masses." He expressed frustration that a law student, whom he had helped educate, would prioritize church renovations as their first major appeal for further assistance. Havi stated that he was "unapologetically sorry" but maintained that the request represented a fundamental misalignment of priorities in a developing nation struggling with basic infrastructure gaps.
