Safety Risks Trigger National Recall of Luxury SUVs

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has officially initiated a safety recall affecting more than 110 luxury vehicles from the Lexus LX500d range. The move comes after technical assessments identified significant faults within the vehicles' automatic transmission systems. NCC spokesperson Pheto Ntaba emphasized the gravity of the defect, warning that the malfunction could lead to unpredictable vehicle behavior, potentially resulting in road accidents or, in extreme cases, igniting a fire within the engine compartment. This intervention aims to protect South African motorists from these high-risk mechanical failures before any injuries are reported.

Specific Models and Distribution Dates Identified

The recall is strictly limited to two high-performance variants: the Lexus LX500d F-Sport and the LX500d Overtrail. According to the commission, the affected units were distributed across the South African market by Lexus South Africa Motors between March 13, 2025, and January 16, 2026. Owners who took delivery of these specific models during this ten-month window are being urged to verify their vehicle’s status immediately. While the number of units—approximately 110—is relatively small, the NCC is treating the matter with high priority due to the severe nature of the potential hazards.

Mandatory ECU Reprogramming Required

To rectify the fault, the NCC has instructed owners to present their vehicles at any authorized Lexus dealership. The fix involves a comprehensive reprogramming of the transmission’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU). This software update is designed to correct the communication errors within the transmission system that lead to the identified safety risks. Lexus South Africa has confirmed that the procedure will be carried out at no cost to the consumer, ensuring that safety compliance does not impose a financial burden on vehicle owners.
