Funeral Amidst Legal Turmoil
The burial of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has become a flashpoint for new political and legal controversies. Hajiya Umma passed away in Cairo on Friday, March 27, 2026, and her remains were flown to Abuja for interment on Sunday. The event took place while Nasir El-Rufai was in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), following his March 24 arraignment on a 10-count charge involving allegations of corruption and money laundering. Although granted a temporary compassionate release to attend the rites, the former governor used the occasion to air serious grievances regarding the treatment of his family.
Allegations of "Leverage" Arrests
In a video statement that has since circulated widely, El-Rufai claimed that his elder brother, Bashir El-Rufai, was intentionally absent from the burial due to credible intelligence regarding a planned arrest. According to the former governor, security agencies believed that by detaining Bashir, they could force Nasir into a "negotiation" regarding his ongoing legal battles and political stance. "My elder brother Bashir El-Rufai couldn’t make it because we learned that there is a plan to arrest him because they believe if they get him, I will negotiate," El-Rufai stated. This allegation suggests a deepening rift between the former governor—now a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—and the federal government.
The ICPC Case and Bail Applications
The former governor’s legal challenges reached a critical juncture on March 31, 2026, the same day the Federal High Court in Kaduna was scheduled to hear pending applications, including his request for bail. El-Rufai’s move to the ADC has coincided with intensified scrutiny from anti-graft agencies, a timing his supporters claim is politically motivated. While the ICPC maintains that the charges are strictly based on financial discrepancies during his tenure as governor, El-Rufai’s recent statements frame the investigation as part of a broader attempt to suppress his influence within the burgeoning opposition coalition.
