Rejection of Claims on Successor Endorsement

The Nasarawa State Government has issued a formal rebuttal to statements made by former governor Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura regarding the 2027 succession plan. In a statement released on April 23, 2026, Senior Special Assistant on Media Ali Abare characterized Al-Makura’s recent television appearance as an act of political inconsistency. The government argued that Al-Makura’s criticism of Governor Abdullahi Sule for endorsing Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada lacks merit, especially given the former governor’s own history of identifying a preferred successor during his tenure.

Historical Precedent in State Succession

Addressing Al-Makura’s grievance over a lack of consultation, the state government reminded the public of the 2018 transition process. Abare questioned the former governor’s transparency during that period, noting that Al-Makura identified Sule as his preferred successor without wide-ranging consultation. The statement asserted that the tradition of a departing governor playing a role in identifying a successor is a long-established political practice in Nasarawa, previously utilized by Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Al-Makura himself.

Commitment to Democratic Primaries

The government clarified that Governor Sule’s endorsement of Wadada is an expression of personal conviction rather than a circumvention of democratic processes. According to the statement, the Governor has not presented Wadada to the presidency as the final candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Instead, the administration maintains that "power belongs to God alone" and insists that a free and fair primary election will be conducted where Wadada must compete against all other qualified aspirants.
