A Fatal Encounter Initiated Online

New evidence has surfaced in the investigation of the mysterious death of Consolata Githinji, a 22 year old student from Murang’a University. Preliminary reports from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations indicate that Githinji met the man currently in custody, Tonny Odhiambo, through a popular dating website. The encounter, which began as a digital connection, culminated in a fatal incident on Sunday, April 26, when the student reportedly fell from the sixth floor of a high rise apartment in the Kileleshwa neighborhood of Nairobi.

The Journey to the First Physical Meeting

The relationship between Githinji and the 33 year old suspect progressed rapidly through daily digital communication after they exchanged phone numbers online. On Saturday, April 25, Githinji traveled approximately 85 kilometers from her university to Nairobi to meet Odhiambo in person for the first time. Odhiambo, who works as a salesperson distributing women’s hair products, had checked into the short stay apartment using his formal identification documents prior to the student's arrival.

Arrest and Judicial Proceedings

Following the fatal fall on Sunday morning, police apprehended Odhiambo at the scene. He was subsequently arraigned at the Kibra Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 27. During the proceedings, the court granted a request from the prosecution to detain the suspect for an additional 10 days. This period is intended to provide the Directorate of Criminal Investigations with sufficient time to conduct a thorough forensic analysis of the apartment and finalize witness statements.
