The cluster-randomized study was conducted across 19 centers in the United States and enrolled nearly 1,000 patients and over 500 caregivers. According to the results published in JAMA Internal Medicine, both groups experienced significant improvements in quality of life over a three-month period. Notably, the care delivered by hepatologists matched the effectiveness of specialists in reducing symptom burden and managing short-term mortality.

Addressing Specialized Workforce Shortages Through Training

The success of the trial offers a scalable solution to the ongoing shortage of palliative care specialists in the American healthcare system. Dr. Manisha Verma, the study's first author, noted that the results challenge traditional medical models by proving that non-specialists can effectively deliver structured palliative support with the correct training. By embedding these services within hepatology clinics, the medical community can facilitate earlier and more widespread access for patients who might otherwise wait months for a dedicated specialist referral.
