A Strategic Overhaul of South Africa’s Premier Aviation Hub
Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) is set to undergo a massive transformation following the announcement of a R10.1 billion revamp. This initiative is a cornerstone of the broader R21.7 billion infrastructure program spearheaded by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). The investment is positioned not just as a facility upgrade but as a vital economic stimulus intended to support the continued growth of tourism and trade in the Western Cape.
The Centerpiece of Innovation: A New Realigned Runway
The most significant component of this upgrade is the construction of a new primary runway, estimated to cost approximately R6.39 billion. This 3,500 meter by 60 meter strip will be realigned eastward by 11.5 degrees. This strategic shift is designed to optimize air traffic patterns and unlock essential development space within the airport precinct for future passenger terminal growth. The new runway will be fully Code F compliant, allowing the airport to host the world’s largest next-generation aircraft.
Enhancing Domestic and International Passenger Flow
Significant capital is being allocated to internal terminal improvements to meet rising passenger demand. The domestic arrivals terminal is slated for a R2.39 billion upgrade, while domestic departures will see a R500 million extension beginning in early 2027. Additionally, the international terminal will receive R863 million for new apron stands, expanded lounge offerings, and streamlined immigration processing. These enhancements prioritize natural light and intuitive wayfinding to improve the overall traveler experience.
