Strategic Exit from Orange Democratic Movement

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has finalized the registration of his own political vehicle, the People’s Renaissance Movement, through the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP). The move confirms widespread speculation regarding his departure from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where he previously held the position of deputy national organizing secretary. Amisi, who was first elected in 2017 and successfully defended his seat in 2022, had been a key figure in the party’s Trans Nzoia branch until recent leadership disputes and ideological shifts began to fracture the organization’s unity.

Opposition to Broad-Based Government

The primary catalyst for Amisi’s departure is his staunch opposition to the emerging "broad-based" cooperation between the mainstream ODM leadership and President William Ruto's administration. As a principal in the Linda Mwananchi movement, Amisi has consistently voiced his disapproval of any partnership that supports the current government's re-election bid in 2027. According to political analysts, the registration of the People’s Renaissance Movement provides a formal platform for ODM "rebels" who wish to maintain a strictly oppositionist stance while distancing themselves from the party’s central executive decisions.

Recruiting a New Opposition Faction

The People’s Renaissance Movement is expected to serve as a hub for other disillusioned lawmakers and political figures who are dissatisfied with the current direction of the opposition. Amisi’s new party is positioned to challenge the traditional influence of the mainstream ODM branch in the Western region. By establishing an independent structure, the Saboti MP aims to consolidate a faction that remains committed to challenging President Ruto’s policies without the constraints of the ODM's recent internal compromises. This tactical shift represents a significant reconfiguration of the political landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle.
