Search and Rescue Operation Concludes Safely
An anxious search for a specialized anti-poaching team ended in relief on Tuesday morning when all four members were found unharmed in the Kruger National Park. The team, comprising two forensic police officers, a South African National Parks (SANParks) environmental investigator, and a private helicopter pilot, had been the subject of an intensive search after they failed to return from a field assignment on Monday.
Disorientation in Dense Vegetation
The team was originally deployed on Monday to investigate a rhino carcass discovered deep within the park. According to preliminary reports, the pilot had landed the helicopter in a section of dense bush to allow the investigators to process the scene. Complications arose during their attempt to trek back to the aircraft. SANParks spokesperson JP Louw explained that the team became disoriented due to the thick vegetation and a critical equipment failure.
GPS Battery Failure Cited as Cause
The primary cause for the team’s inability to relocate their helicopter was the failure of their handheld GPS device. "The GPS device ran out of battery power, resulting in the team being unable to relocate the helicopter," Louw confirmed in a statement. The loss of navigation, combined with the difficult terrain, led to a total loss of contact with the crew overnight, prompting the launch of both aerial and ground search teams.
