Tinubu Administration Achieves Historic Generation Milestones
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has declared that the federal government’s strategic reforms are yielding tangible results, headlined by the attainment of Nigeria’s highest electricity generation peak in recent history. Addressing the first-quarter 2026 Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Stakeholders’ Meeting in Lagos, the Minister emphasized that despite the time required for structural changes to mature, key performance indices over the last three years show a clear upward trajectory. This milestone is being positioned as a turning point for a sector traditionally defined by its inability to meet growing national demand.
Presidential Intervention on Legacy Debts
A central pillar of the current success, according to Adelabu, is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s direct intervention in the sector’s liquidity crisis. The President recently approved the settlement of longstanding "legacy debts" owed to electricity Generation Companies (GenCos). Adelabu praised the President for "taking the bull by the horns," noting that clearing these financial obligations has restored investor confidence and provided GenCos with the necessary capital to maintain and expand their operational capacities. This fiscal cleanup is viewed as a prerequisite for the long-term sustainability of the entire value chain.
Two-Week Timeline for Supply Improvement
While acknowledging recent outages, the Minister expressed strong optimism regarding a near-term surge in available power. He revealed that repairs on previously disrupted critical gas pipelines have been completed, and gas volumes are currently being ramped up to fuel thermal power plants. Adelabu provided a specific outlook, stating that Nigerians should expect a significant and visible improvement in electricity supply within the next two weeks. This recovery is contingent on the stabilization of the gas-to-power supply chain, which remains the backbone of Nigeria’s energy mix.
