Dynamics of aerial munition attrition

The central military narrative of the current conflict is defined by a race to the bottom of aerial munition stockpiles among the primary combatants. Iran is focused on depleting the interceptor depth of regional missile defense systems while attempting to strike high profile strategic targets. Conversely, the United States and Israel are engaged in a campaign to locate and eliminate Iranian transporter erector launchers before they can deploy their payloads, while simultaneously targeting production facilities and command structures.

Success in mobile launcher interdiction

Historically, the mission of hunting mobile missile launchers has proven difficult, but current operations suggest a significant shift in effectiveness. The Israeli Air Force reported the destruction of over 300 missile launchers since the onset of the war. This success is attributed to the near impunity of United States and Israeli drones operating at medium and high altitudes, providing continuous surveillance that allows coalition forces to detect and destroy launchers as they emerge from underground bunkers.

Scale of ballistic missile deployment

During the first six days of the current war, Iran is estimated to have launched between 600 and 700 ballistic missiles. While this number is higher than the 500 to 600 missiles expended during the 12 Day War in June 2025, the current launches appear less coordinated and more unevenly spaced. Analysts suggest this lack of theater wide coordination stems from the degradation of Iranian command and control systems, forcing smaller units to operate under pre-delegated authority.
