A Tragic Loss in Nairobi’s CBD
The death of 25-year-old Brian Muendo has sparked widespread outrage across Nairobi after details emerged of his fatal assault outside a nightclub in the Central Business District. Muendo, a hardworking egg vendor, was reportedly caught in the crosshairs of a confrontation he had no part in. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko took to social media on Tuesday, April 7, to highlight the tragedy, sharing a recorded conversation with a fellow hawker who witnessed the events leading to the young man's death.
Assault at Soma Club
The incident occurred on the night of Friday, April 3, at Soma Club, located in the Odeon area opposite the Maximum Miracle Centre. Witnesses state that a dispute began inside the establishment between a bouncer and several patrons before spilling out onto the street. Muendo was peacefully conducting his business nearby when he was allegedly targeted and brutally attacked by the bouncer. Despite being rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital around 5:00 PM the following day, he was pronounced dead a few hours later due to the severity of his injuries.
Suspect on the Run
The primary suspect has been identified as a man named Momanyi, who reportedly served as a bouncer at the establishment. According to local residents and accounts shared with Sonko, Momanyi has a history of violent behavior in the area. It is further alleged that just one day prior to the fatal attack on Muendo, the same individual had severely assaulted another person. Momanyi fled the scene following the incident and currently remains at large, evading law enforcement.
