Middletown Fugitive Extradited and Charged in Columbia Heights Homicide Investigation

Discovery of the Scene on 16th Street

The investigation began in the early morning hours of February 2, 2026. At approximately 3:07 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District were dispatched to a residence in the 3100 block of 16th Street, Northwest, following a 911 hang-up call. Upon entering the home, officers discovered an adult female victim suffering from a gunshot wound. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived shortly thereafter but found no signs consistent with life. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified as 27 year old Nyesha Walden-Hatcher, a resident of Northwest D.C.

Multi-State Fugitive Apprehension

Following the homicide, detectives obtained a District of Columbia Superior Court arrest warrant for Tyjuan Bazemore. The search led authorities to Middletown, Connecticut, where members of the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended the 35 year old suspect on February 10, 2026. Bazemore remained in Connecticut custody pending the completion of the extradition process.

Formal Charges and Extradition

On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Bazemore was officially turned over to the custody of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fugitive Unit. He was transported back to the District and processed at the Homicide Branch. Bazemore is now facing a charge of Second Degree Murder While Armed (Gun). MPD officials expressed gratitude to the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force for their role in tracking the suspect across state lines.
