Sudden Suspensions Block Critical Windows Updates

Microsoft has initiated a wave of developer account terminations that have effectively paralyzed the distribution of updates for several essential open source utilities. Affected projects include the encryption software VeraCrypt, the VPN protocols WireGuard and Windscribe, and the diagnostic tool MemTest86. These developers rely on Microsoft Partner Center accounts to sign Windows drivers and bootloaders, a technical requirement for software to run securely on the Windows operating system. Without access to these accounts, maintainers are currently unable to issue new builds or emergency security fixes to their primary user base.

Lack of Communication Frustrates Maintainers

The developers involved have reported a total lack of prior notification or explanation from Microsoft regarding the abrupt service termination. Mounir Idrassi, the lead developer for VeraCrypt, noted that he received no warning emails and found no available path for appeal through standard automated channels. Similarly, WireGuard maintainer Jason A. Donenfeld expressed concern over the potential for unpatched vulnerabilities, highlighting that the inability to update users immediately during a critical exploit scenario represents a significant security risk for the global Windows ecosystem.

Automated Verification Deadlines Cited as the Cause

In response to the growing backlash, Microsoft Vice President Scott Hanselman clarified that the suspensions were the result of an automated verification process. Microsoft had reportedly mandated that all partners in the Windows Hardware Program complete a re verification of their accounts by late 2025 or early 2026. According to official company documentation, partners who failed to provide updated credentials or pass the "Rejected" verification status were subject to automatic suspension from the program, a policy that concluded its final phase on March 30.
