Video Release Details Mental Health Intervention

This week, the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) made public the body-worn camera footage involving Jamal Thompson, a Silver Spring resident who died following an interaction with law enforcement. The footage, captured on December 15, 2025, shows officers responding to an apartment complex on Mount Pisgah Road after a caller reported that Thompson was in a "mental situation" and had not slept for days. The video documents the moments officers surrounded Thompson in a lobby, where he can be heard repeatedly saying, "Please, I’m scared," and "I don’t want this," while being placed in restraints.

Timeline of the Emergency Evaluation

According to police reports and the newly released footage, the encounter began around 8:30 p.m. After a brief struggle to detain him, officers placed Thompson in a "recovery position" on his side. He remained in handcuffs for approximately 25 minutes until Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel moved him onto a stretcher. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital for an emergency mental health evaluation. However, the situation took a tragic turn approximately two hours after his admission when Thompson experienced an unspecified medical crisis.

State Investigation and Officer Status

Jamal Thompson remained hospitalized until his death on December 22, 2025. The Maryland Attorney General’s Office has taken the lead on the investigation, as per state law regarding deaths following police custody. While the IID has identified the seven officers involved Officer Kevin Argueta, Officer Kyle Conley, Officer Rebecca Davis, Officer Rachel Hopko, Officer Kimorra Maier, Officer Maxie Weisz, and Officer Colin Staszewski none have been placed on administrative leave. Montgomery County Police spokesperson Shiera Goff confirmed that the department is cooperating fully with the state’s independent probe.
