A Winter of Rehabilitation and Uncertainty

The road to the 2026 MotoGP season opener in Buriram has been a grueling one for Marc Marquez. While he enters the year as a title favorite after his 2025 championship success, the Spaniard is still feeling the lingering effects of a massive high-side crash at Lombok in October. The resulting shoulder fracture was "no joke," according to Marquez, and it effectively wiped out his winter training program. After being forced to miss the Valencia post-season test, Marquez only returned to a motorcycle in late December and didn't sample the new Ducati GP26 until the Sepang test in February. As the lights go up for the Thailand Grand Prix, the champion admits he is still searching for his 100% physical ceiling.

Technical Compromises: Reverting to 2024 Aero

In a significant tactical shift, Marquez has opted to start the 2026 season using a version of Ducati's 2024 aerodynamics package rather than the latest 2025 development. The reason is purely physical; the 2025 aero, while theoretically faster, requires more upper-body strength to wrestle the bike through high-speed transitions. "I need a bike that turns a little more, that goes more in the right line and doesn't force it as much as last year," Marquez explained to DAZN. By using the less demanding '24 aero, he hopes to preserve his energy over full race distances until his shoulder strength returns to its previous levels.

A Complicated Pre-Season hampered by Illness

Marquez’s preparations were further hindered during the final official test in Buriram by a severe bout of gastroenteritis. The stomach bug left his body feeling "empty," making it impossible to perform long-run simulations or a full time-attack program on the final day of testing. Despite this, his raw talent remained evident as he finished the test as the top Ducati rider in third place overall. While he confirmed he is feeling more energetic ahead of the race weekend, the combination of a major injury recovery and a recent illness has placed him on the back foot compared to his fully fit rivals at Aprilia and KTM.
