A Rising Toll on the Madrid Entry List
The competitive landscape for the first major clay-court WTA 1000 of the season has shifted dramatically as the number of withdrawals reached 17 across both singles draws. While the weekend initially saw 13 players pull out, a new cohort of four women—including former Grand Slam champions Emma Raducanu and Barbora Krejcikova—has further thinned the field. The combined event, which features 96 players per draw, is set to begin women's main draw action on Tuesday, followed by the men on Wednesday.
Physical Setbacks for Men's Title Contenders
The ATP tournament has lost three of its top ten players, most notably the local favorite and two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz. The world No. 2 will miss his home event for the second consecutive year due to a wrist injury sustained during the Barcelona Open. Joining him on the sidelines is world No. 4 Novak Djokovic, who cited an ongoing recovery from a shoulder injury. Djokovic’s 2026 campaign remains sparse, having competed in only two tournaments this year. World No. 8 Taylor Fritz has also withdrawn, having not yet made an appearance on clay this season.
WTA Stars and Former Champions Opt Out
On the women's side, the withdrawal of Emma Raducanu has sparked fresh concerns as she hasn't competed since Indian Wells. The 2021 US Open winner is joined by two-time major champion Barbora Krejcikova and world No. 27 Emma Navarro. These late exits have opened doors for several alternates; Raducanu will be replaced in the draw by Ajla Tomljanovic, while Krejcikova’s spot is taken by Zeynep Sonmez. Despite these losses, the tournament still features defending champion Aryna Sabalenka as she looks to repeat her success in the Spanish capital.
