Financial Burdens on Evacuees
Luxembourg residents currently stuck in Qatar face the prospect of paying thousands of euros to secure their return to the Grand Duchy. According to correspondence from the foreign ministry, those opting for a coordinated evacuation via Saudi Arabia must personally fund their entry visas and subsequent airfare from Riyadh. This requirement has drawn criticism from citizens who argue that the financial demands place an undue burden on families already facing the stress of a war zone, with some expressing concerns about accruing significant debt to reach safety.
Logistical Challenges in Doha
The evacuation plan for those in the Qatari capital involves a 600 kilometer bus journey provided by Belgium, which is set to transport citizens to the Saudi capital. Passengers have been informed that while the ground transport will be billed at a reasonable rate, the administrative hurdles remain high. One resident reported receiving security alerts advising family members to stay away from doors and windows as the country experiences a high volume of missile interceptions, adding urgency to the complicated departure process.
Diplomatic Oversight and Registration
Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel confirmed that hundreds of Luxembourgers have registered with the LamA platform to receive government updates across the region. As of Wednesday, over 320 citizens were signed up in the United Arab Emirates, with dozens more in Oman, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Jordan. Despite this registration system, it remains unclear to what extent the Luxembourg government will subsidize these repatriation journeys or if the financial responsibility will continue to fall largely on the individual travelers.
