Medical Neglect Investigation Into Brain Surgery Recovery
A welfare investigation in Shreveport has culminated in the arrest of a 39-year-old mother following allegations of extreme medical neglect. The case began on March 9 when the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) alerted the Shreveport Police Department to a critical situation involving a 6-year-old boy. The child had undergone complex brain surgery in October 2025 to treat craniopharyngioma, a type of brain mass. Despite the high-stakes nature of the recovery, medical facilities reported that the child’s post-operative care had been effectively abandoned by his legal guardian.
Severe Post-Operative Complications and Missed Care
The clinical gravity of the case centers on the child’s post-surgical diagnoses, which included hypopituitarism, post-op diabetes insipidus, and secondary adrenal insufficiency. These conditions require rigorous and consistent medical management to prevent life-threatening crises. Hospital staff documented that the mother, identified as LaShonda Zenon, missed approximately seven scheduled appointments and canceled six others. Despite repeated attempts by medical professionals to reach Zenon and confirm these vital visits, the child remained without necessary specialist oversight for several months.
Escalation of Legal and Custodial Authority
The neglect investigation gained momentum on January 14 when DCFS received a formal report regarding the lack of medical follow-up. By February 26, the situation was deemed sufficiently dangerous for a judge to grant DCFS custodial authority over the child. However, locating the boy proved difficult as Zenon reportedly evaded authorities at her residence on Royalton Drive. For several days, Zenon refused to answer the door or respond to phone calls from caseworkers, creating a legal impasse until a specific judicial order was issued on March 10 allowing law enforcement to enter the premises.
