Renewed Pursuit of Accountability for Former Minister

The long-standing controversy surrounding Fikile Mbalula’s international travel has entered a new legal phase as a prominent South African lobby group intensifies its push for criminal charges. During a high-profile briefing at their headquarters in Centurion on Wednesday, AfriForum’s private prosecutions unit declared that it would not abandon its efforts to hold the former sports minister accountable for his 2016 family holiday. The organization alleges that the trip to the United Arab Emirates was improperly funded by a third party with direct financial ties to the South African government. This move marks a significant escalation in a case that has lingered in the public eye for nearly a decade without a definitive legal resolution.

The Financial Mechanics of the Dubai Excursion

The core of the legal dispute involves a vacation bill totaling R680,000 incurred during Mbalula’s tenure as the head of the sports ministry. Investigations revealed that when the travel agency was not initially paid by the minister, a subsidiary of Sedgars Sports stepped in to settle approximately R300,000 of the outstanding debt. At the time of this transaction, Sedgars Sports was an active service provider for both the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the SA Sports Federation. AfriForum argues that this payment constitutes a clear conflict of interest and potential corruption, given the commercial relationship between the sponsor and the government bodies overseen by Mbalula.

Gerrie Nel Targets Prosecutorial Inaction

Advocate Gerrie Nel, the head of AfriForum’s private prosecutions unit, expressed sharp criticism of the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) handling of the matter to date. Speaking to the media on March 25, 2026, Nel asserted that there has been a deliberate misunderstanding of the legal definitions of corruption by state prosecutors. He argued that the authorities have failed to ensure a completed and thorough investigation into the financial arrangements behind the Dubai trip. In response, his unit has officially forwarded a detailed dossier to the new head of the NPA, demanding that the state reconsider its position or provide the necessary certificate to allow AfriForum to pursue a private prosecution.
