The Dual Tragedy on Webuye Road
A devastating road accident in Kakamega County has left the Webuye–Kitale highway shrouded in grief after a secondary collision turned a rescue effort into a mass casualty event. Linet Mwanja, a local resident currently receiving medical treatment, described how she rushed toward the sound of screams following a head-on collision between two motorcycles. According to Mwanja, as she and other neighbors moved to aid the injured motorcyclists, an out-of-control trailer suddenly emerged and rammed into the gathered crowd, leaving dozens of people scattered across the pavement.
The Catastrophic Toll on a Single Household
The scale of the tragedy is most acutely felt by the family of Ezekiel Kinusu, a local pastor who lost six relatives in the span of moments. Kinusu, who had been visiting his mother at the time of the incident, identified his mother, three siblings, and a neighbor among the deceased. The first motorcycle crash had already claimed one of his kin, but the subsequent impact of the trailer multiplied the loss, wiping out nearly an entire generation of his household and leaving the surrounding village in a state of collective mourning.
Medical Response and Hospitalization Efforts
David Waikina, the medical superintendent at Webuye County Hospital, confirmed that the facility managed a total of 31 casualties following the Monday afternoon crash. While several victims were pronounced dead on arrival, five others succumbed to their severe injuries while undergoing emergency procedures at the hospital. Currently, sixteen survivors remain under supervised care, grappling with various degrees of physical trauma as medical teams work to stabilize those who escaped the initial impact of the heavy trailer.
