Diplomatic Expulsion and the Breach of Sovereign Relations
The Lebanese government has taken the rare step of declaring Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Reza Shibani persona non grata, effectively terminating his diplomatic credentials. Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the Iranian Chargé d’Affaires on March 24 to formally communicate the withdrawal of the ambassador's agrément. Shibani has been ordered to depart Lebanese territory by March 29, a move that signals a sharp departure from Beirut’s previous tolerance of Tehran’s extensive involvement in domestic affairs. This decision reflects a hardening stance against the use of Lebanese soil as a staging ground for regional conflicts.
Targeting Hezbollah’s Logistical and Financial Infrastructure
Parallel to the diplomatic crisis, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have intensified operations against Hezbollah’s physical assets within Lebanon. Recent strikes have successfully neutralized a strategic bridge over the Litani River, a critical artery used by the militant group to transport weaponry to the southern front. Additionally, the IDF targeted fuel depots belonging to Al-Amana, a company under Hezbollah’s direct control. According to Israeli military reports, these facilities are dual-purpose, serving to refuel tactical vehicles while generating revenue for terrorist activities through commercial fuel sales.
Shifting Security Calculations in Southern Lebanon
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has reaffirmed that military operations will continue with full force until the security of northern Israel is permanently ensured. The current Israeli strategy mandates that hundreds of thousands of displaced residents from southern Lebanon will not be permitted to return to areas south of the Litani River under current conditions. This enforcement of a buffer zone is designed to weaken Hezbollah’s territorial grip and prevent the group from re-establishing the launch sites used prior to the 2024 ceasefire, fundamentally altering the security calculus for both Beirut and Jerusalem.
