Lebanese Government Responds To Security Zone Declarations

The Lebanese Ministry of Defense has issued a sharp condemnation following Israel’s announcement of a new "security zone" reaching deep into Lebanese territory. Major General Michel Menassa stated on Tuesday evening that the Israeli government’s rhetoric has shifted from theoretical military threats to a concrete plan for a long-term occupation. This diplomatic escalation follows statements by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who asserted that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would maintain active security control over the region extending from the international border up to the Litani River.

Concerns Over Mass Displacement And Systematic Destruction

Menassa’s statement emphasized the humanitarian and structural risks posed by the Israeli military's current posture. He argued that the "security zone" strategy is specifically designed to forcibly displace hundreds of thousands of Lebanese citizens from their ancestral homes. Furthermore, the Lebanese Defense Minister accused Israel of a systematic campaign to destroy villages and towns across the south to ensure the area remains uninhabitable for the local population. This "scorched earth" approach, according to Beirut, is a direct violation of international law and a primary component of the "new occupation" strategy.

Sovereignty Disputes Over The Litani River Corridor

A central point of contention in the current standoff is the geographic scope of the proposed security buffer. By aiming for control up to the Litani River—a strategic waterway located roughly 30 kilometers north of the border—Israel is significantly expanding its operational footprint compared to previous conflicts. Menassa denounced this as a "deepening of the aggression," noting that any unilateral imposition of Israeli security control north of the Blue Line constitutes a total disregard for Lebanese national sovereignty. The Lebanese government maintains that the presence of foreign troops on its soil without a bilateral agreement is an act of war that cannot be justified by security claims.
