The probe was triggered by a report from Chen Jian Iao, a Chinese supermarket owner who received death threats ahead of his new store opening. The intimidation included:
Death Threats: Messages warning the owner that he would be killed if the shop opened.
Symbolic Intimidation: Graffiti painted in red on the storefront, which the victim testified was intended to symbolize blood.
Following the report, authorities utilized CCTV analysis, surveillance, and community intelligence to track the suspects to several properties located just blocks from the supermarket.
