The "Fire Behind Every Door" at Milton Keynes

Speaking on the Beyond the Grid podcast, Laurent Mekies offered a confident rebuttal to claims that Max Verstappen is considering walking away from Formula 1. Amidst a five-week "April break" caused by the cancellation of races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the driver market has been dominated by Verstappen's blunt critiques of the 2026 machinery. Mekies, however, insists the focus at Red Bull’s Milton Keynes base is entirely on engineering. "We don’t think about our driver market in ’27; we think about getting a fast car," Mekies stated. He argued that if the team delivers a dominant vehicle, the "discussion about what Max is doing next year" effectively vanishes.

Verstappen’s Grievances: "Super-Clipping" and Safety

The core of Verstappen’s discontent lies in the technical architecture of the 2026 cars, which feature a 50-50 power split between the internal combustion engine and electrical systems. At Suzuka, Verstappen was vocal about the loss of the "flat-out" qualifying feel, as batteries frequently empty before the end of a lap, causing a sudden drop in speed known as "super-clipping." Verstappen has characterized the need for extensive lift-and-coast as "not what racing should be," even suggesting the FIA "just call it safety and fix it" to allow for more aggressive driving styles. His father, Jos Verstappen, has also expressed fears that a lack of mechanical motivation could lead Max to prioritize family life over a grueling race calendar.

Contractual Clauses and the 2027 Horizon

While Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull is officially slated to run until 2028, it is widely understood that his contract contains performance-related exit triggers. These clauses reportedly allow him to open negotiations with rival teams if Red Bull fails to maintain a specific position in the Constructors' or Drivers' Championships. Mekies acknowledged that Verstappen is "ultimately a competitor" who needs the fastest car on the planet to stay engaged. The team boss is banking on a series of FIA meetings throughout April to "tweak" the regulations, bringing the cars back toward a purer racing experience that would satisfy the Dutchman’s demands.
