Expanding the Algarve’s Digital Security Shield
The municipality of Lagos is moving forward with plans to modernize its public safety infrastructure, joining a growing list of southern Portuguese towns utilizing video surveillance. According to Michael Bruxo, the Portuguese government has officially authorized the installation of cameras in areas overseen by the GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana). This approval marks a critical milestone for Lagos, which seeks to align its security protocols with neighboring municipalities like Albufeira, Portimão, and Faro.
Navigating Jurisdictional Approvals
While the GNR portion of the project has been greenlit, the full rollout remains pending final authorization for zones managed by the PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública). The municipal council has indicated that a unified tender for the equipment cannot be launched until both police forces have received their respective legal clearances. Council official Pereira told Lusa news agency that the PSP authorization—which covers a larger number of cameras and more expansive locations—is expected by the end of March 2026, setting the stage for an April tender.
Infrastructure and Technical Readiness
Lagos has proactively prepared for the digital transition, ensuring that the town’s physical infrastructure is ready for immediate deployment once the legal hurdles are cleared. The municipality has already established power points and high-speed 5G connectivity hubs across the town. Additionally, the necessary hardware for dedicated observation rooms has been procured. This technical readiness is expected to significantly shorten the window between the awarding of the contract and the functional operation of the surveillance net.
