A Procedural Dead End for re-entry

The Labour Party (LP) has officially closed the door on a potential return for its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections. During an appearance on ARISE Television on April 23, 2026, the party’s interim caretaker committee chairperson, Nenadi Usman, clarified that the window for re-entry has effectively shut. Usman cited the legal and procedural frameworks governing party primaries, noting that once the e-register of eligible participants is closed and submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), no late additions can be made for candidacy.

Impact of Obi's Move to the ADC

The clarification follows Peter Obi’s high profile exit from the Labour Party in December 2025, when he defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Usman explained that because Obi is no longer a registered member, he cannot bypass the 21 day pre-primary registration deadline mandated by law. "You can’t come from behind the door for us to register you and for you to contest," Usman stated, describing a return at this stage as "legally impossible." This move signals a definitive break between the party and the figure who led its 2023 "Obidient" movement.

Leadership Legitimacy and Internal Reform

Usman’s remarks come in the wake of a significant legal victory at the Court of Appeal, which dismissed an appeal by Julius Abure challenging the current caretaker leadership. With this judicial backing, the Usman led camp is moving forward with congresses and a national convention scheduled for Umuahia, Abia State. The chairperson emphasized that the party is prioritizing institutional order over personality driven politics, accusing rival factions of using "weaponized litigation" to destabilize the party’s rebuilding efforts.
