Clarifying the Purpose of the Ibadan Gathering
In a press briefing held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Monday, April 27, 2026, Philip Agbese addressed circulating rumors regarding a coalition between major opposition parties. While representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) met in Ibadan to discuss a potential joint candidate for 2027, Agbese clarified that any Labour Party (LP) figures present in the city were not there for official summit consultations. He maintained that the LP was not a party to the discussions aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at this stage.
Prioritizing the National Convention
Agbese, who serves as the Chairman of the Media Sub-Committee for the LP National Convention Planning Committee, emphasized that the party’s primary objective is the successful execution of its convention on April 28. This event is viewed by the leadership as a critical mechanism for "putting the house in order" and strengthening internal processes. The lawmaker, a recent defector from the APC, noted that institutional stability and a unified structure are prerequisites for any future external engagements or political alliances.
A Strategy of Internal Consolidation
The Labour Party’s current stance reflects a deliberate shift toward organizational depth rather than immediate electoral maneuvering. Agbese highlighted that the party is focused on expanding its membership base and deepening internal democracy to reposition itself as a credible standalone platform. By prioritizing internal cohesion now, the party intends to build a solid foundation that can withstand the pressures of the 2027 general elections without the distractions of premature coalition talks that might compromise party discipline.
