Coalition Advocates for Regional Equity in Gubernatorial Race
A formidable coalition of All Progressives Congress (APC) support groups within the Baruten Local Government Area has renewed its demand for a strategic power shift to the Kwara North senatorial district. During a press conference held in Okuta, the group argued that the current political landscape in Kwara State remains characterized by a lopsidedness that marginalizes the northern zone. Spokesman Hon. Abdullahi Idris asserted that after decades of supporting administrations from other districts, it is a matter of political justice for the rest of the state to reciprocate by conceding the 2027 governorship to Kwara North.
Speaker Yakubu Danladi,Salihu Positioned as Preferred Candidate
The coalition has officially thrown its weight behind Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi,Salihu, the current Speaker of the State House of Assembly, as the ideal candidate to lead the state in 2027. Supporters cited Danladi,Salihu’s track record in youth empowerment and rural infrastructure as primary reasons for their endorsement. According to Hon. Idris, the Speaker has personally facilitated critical water supply projects, including numerous boreholes, and secured employment opportunities for constituents, demonstrating a capacity for governance that extends beyond his legislative duties.
Historical Exclusion and Developmental Stagnation in the North
A central grievance raised during the briefing was the fact that Kwara North has not produced a governor since the return to democratic rule in 1999. This prolonged exclusion, according to local stakeholders, has resulted in the chronic neglect of the region's infrastructure, particularly regarding its poor road networks. Barrister Abubakar Othman described the Speaker as a compassionate and accessible leader whose emergence could finally address the systemic underdevelopment that has plagued the district despite its consistent loyalty to the ruling party.
