Legislative Priorities and the National Assistance Plan
During a critical parliamentary session on April 14, Knesset Finance Committee Chairman Hanoch Milwidsky denied requests from heads of local authorities in northern Israel to address lawmakers remotely. Milwidsky, a member of the Likud party, explained that the current legislative focus remains strictly on formulating the wartime Economic Assistance Plan Bill, a national framework intended to support business owners across all of Israel. According to the chairman, allowing specific regional leaders to intervene during this stage of the debate would impede the progress of wider efforts to stabilize the national economy.
The Distinction Between Regional and National Compensation
The chairman emphasized that while northern businesses have suffered unique and severe damage, they are currently being addressed as part of a general business plan. Milwidsky stated that although these entities are entitled to an enhanced and dedicated framework tailored to the characteristics of the region, the immediate goal is to establish a uniform national compensation structure. By restricting remote participation from the north, the committee aims to prevent the discussion from fragmenting into localized issues before the broader economic legislation is finalized for the entire country.
Parliamentary Tours and Direct Engagement Plans
In an effort to mitigate criticism regarding the exclusion of northern voices, Milwidsky announced plans for a direct field mission. He coordinated with Knesset Internal Affairs Committee Chairman Yitzhak Kroizer of the Otzma Yehudit party to organize a joint tour of the northern region for lawmakers from both panels. This initiative is designed to allow members of the Knesset to witness the extent of the damage firsthand and identify specific areas where legislative intervention can be most effective, rather than relying on remote testimony during committee hearings.
