Astana Reimagines South Caucasus Connectivity

Kazakhstan has launched an aggressive diplomatic expansion into the South Caucasus, led by Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev, to insulate its economy from shifting geopolitical pressures. During his high-level tour of Yerevan, Baku, and Tbilisi, Kosherbayev articulated a vision where the region serves as a permanent logistics hub for Kazakh exports. According to the Foreign Ministry, the evolving global landscape has created a window of opportunity to elevate bilateral relations to a qualitatively new level, moving beyond traditional trade toward deeply integrated industrial and digital partnerships.

Digital and Nuclear Synergies in Armenia

In Yerevan, the Kazakh delegation prioritized technological exchange and the formalization of long-term economic roadmaps. Kosherbayev’s meetings with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President Vahagn Khachaturyan resulted in the advancement of a trade program spanning 2026 to 2030, with a specific focus on artificial intelligence, nuclear energy, and digitalization. A significant cultural and educational cornerstone of the visit was the agreement to establish a branch of the TUMO center in Astana, signaling a shift toward high-tech collaboration alongside traditional agricultural exports like grain and meat.

Baku Becomes Pivotal Link for Energy Diversification

The tour’s stop in Azerbaijan underscored the strategic necessity of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route for Kazakhstan’s energy independence. Minister Kosherbayev and President Ilham Aliyev discussed a roadmap to increase bilateral trade from its 2025 level of $470.7 million to a target of $1 billion. Key to this alliance are infrastructure projects involving subsea power cables and fiber-optic lines across the Caspian Sea. According to official statements, Azerbaijan remains the indispensable link in Kazakhstan’s westward corridor, facilitating the transit of energy resources directly to European markets while bypassing vulnerable northern routes.
