Economic Pressures Force Price Adjustment

The Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) in Kano State has announced a significant upward review of the price of sachet water, commonly referred to as "pure water." Effective immediately, a bag of sachet water that previously retailed for ₦220 will now be sold at a minimum price of ₦300 across the state. In a statement released on Tuesday, March 10, the association’s Public Relations Officer, Anas Idris Hassan, clarified that the 36% increase was a necessary response to the volatile economic conditions affecting the manufacturing sector.

Rising Costs of Raw Materials and Energy

According to the association, the primary driver behind the price hike is the sharp increase in the cost of essential production inputs. Specifically, the price of printing film used for packaging has climbed to approximately ₦3,700, placing a heavy burden on factory overheads. Furthermore, the energy crisis has exacerbated the situation; with fuel and gas prices reaching ₦1,500 per litre, producers are finding it increasingly difficult to sustain operations. The dependence on diesel-powered generators is no longer a choice but a necessity due to the unreliable national electricity grid in the region.

Industry Survival and Quality Assurance

ATWAP Chairman, Ahmad Bala Hudu, emphasized that the price review was a "last resort" intended to prevent the total collapse of the sachet water industry in Kano. Hudu noted that many small-scale producers were on the verge of shutting down due to unsustainable margins. Despite the price increase, the chairman issued a stern warning to members against cutting corners. He reiterated that all producers must maintain strict adherence to purification standards, including the proper maintenance of reverse osmosis systems, to ensure the safety of the public water supply.
