Legislative Closure on Executive Dispute

The Kano State House of Assembly has formally ended its efforts to remove the former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam, from office. During a plenary session held on Tuesday, the assembly moved to withdraw the impeachment notice that had been looming over the former official. Speaker Jibril Isma’il noted that the primary objective of the proceedings was the removal of the official, and since Abdulsalam chose to resign voluntarily, continuing the legislative trial would be an unnecessary exercise.

Procedural Withdrawal of Misconduct Charges

The decision to halt the process was solidified through a motion raised by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yangurasa. Citing Order 3, Rule 6A of the assembly’s standing rules, Hussaini explained that the voluntary departure of the Deputy Governor rendered the impeachment process moot. He clarified to reporters that the legislature has effectively laid the matter to rest, as the constitutional path for removal is no longer applicable to a private citizen who no longer holds the seat.

Limits of Legislative Mandate Defined

In justifying the withdrawal, the Majority Leader emphasized the specific boundaries of the assembly's authority. According to Hussaini, the House of Assembly is not a criminal investigative body like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission or the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission. He stated that the legislative mandate is restricted to the removal of an official found guilty of misconduct, and with the resignation already in effect, the House has fulfilled its role in the transition of power.
