Judicial Decisiveness in Kano Drug Enforcement
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano Strategic Command has secured a significant legal victory following the sentencing of 20-year-old Muhammad Maharazu. Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court 1 in Kano delivered the 15-year prison sentence on April 15, 2026, marking a decisive conclusion to a case involving illicit substance possession and violent resistance. The court ruled that the term of imprisonment begins immediately from the date of the judgment, notably excluding any alternative option for a financial penalty.
Tactical Operation at Filin Idi Hotspot
The conviction stems from a targeted operation conducted on February 14, 2026, at Filin Idi, an area recognized by authorities as a high-activity zone for narcotics. Operatives from the Commander’s Special Joint Task Force apprehended Maharazu during a sweep of the location. Upon his arrest, officers discovered a variety of illegal substances in his possession, including a significant quantity of Diazepam tablets, which are classified as controlled pharmaceuticals prone to abuse.
Violent Resistance and Officer Safety
According to a formal statement by Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, representing the NDLEA, the arrest was characterized by a dangerous confrontation. Maharazu reportedly attempted to evade the operatives and escalated the situation by wielding a long knife in an apparent effort to assault the arresting officers. Despite the immediate threat of violence, the task force successfully disarmed the suspect without further injury, moving him into custody for formal charging and prosecution.
