Targeted Harassment at Arroyo Vista Housing
A violent encounter involving a group of five teenagers and a university student has prompted a hate crime investigation by the UC Irvine Police Department. The incident occurred on February 27 near the Arroyo Vista Housing complex shortly after the conclusion of a community event. According to reports from the university’s Black Student Union, the group of white teenagers initiated the confrontation by shouting racial slurs and falsely accusing the student of spitting on them, which escalated into a physical pursuit across the housing area.
Physical Assault Using Electronic Bicycles
The confrontation turned physical when the teenagers used their e-bikes to chase the victim through the residential grounds. One of the juveniles reportedly rammed the back of the student's leg with the front tire of a bicycle, an act that investigators described as an attempt to force the victim off the road. This collision caused significant physical trauma, including torn skin, bruising, and a subsequent infection of the victim's ankle, according to statements released by student representatives.
Emergency Response and Suspect Detention
The pursuit ended only after the victim sought refuge inside the Rosa Parks House and contacted law enforcement for assistance. While the majority of the teenagers fled the scene before police arrived, one suspect was successfully detained by a university officer at a nearby parking structure. Despite the detention of one individual, police are still working to identify and locate the remaining four members of the group involved in the assault and harassment.
