The Final Ascent to the Apex Court

Justice Mohamed Abdullahi Warsame has been officially selected by the Judicial Service Commission to join the Supreme Court of Kenya, concluding a highly competitive recruitment process. Announced on Wednesday, April 29, the nomination serves as the pinnacle of a legal career that has spanned more than 20 years. Warsame successfully navigated a selection field that included four other high, profile candidates, ultimately securing the position left vacant following the death of Justice Mohamed Khadhar Ibrahim in December 2025. Chief Justice Martha Koome emphasized that the decision adhered strictly to constitutional mandates, focusing on principles of merit, integrity, and regional balance.

A Foundation Built in Private Practice and the High Court

Warsame’s path to the highest court began with a robust academic foundation at the University of Nairobi, where he earned his Bachelor of Laws in 1992. After obtaining a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law, he was admitted to the roll of advocates in 1994. Before ascending to the bench, Warsame spent nearly a decade in private legal practice, gaining the foundational courtroom experience that would define his judicial style. In 2003, he transitioned to the judiciary as a High Court judge, serving across various divisions including Criminal and Commercial law, where he earned a reputation for administrative efficiency and decisive rulings.

Elevation During a Period of Reform

The promulgation of the 2010 Constitution ushered in a new era for the Kenyan judiciary, and Warsame was a central figure in these institutional changes. In 2012, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal as part of a broader effort to modernize the court system and enhance its independence. During his tenure at the High Court and the Court of Appeal, he held leadership roles in several major stations including Nairobi, Nakuru, and Kisii. His career during this time was characterized by his work in the Judicial Review Division, where he presided over matters concerning the oversight of government and administrative actions.
