According to Jonathan Wheatley, the Chinese Grand Prix served as a stark highlight of these deficiencies, where driver Nico Hulkenberg struggled significantly at the Turn 6 hairpin. Wheatley noted that the engine’s recovery window was difficult to manage in slow-speed sections, making it hard for the car to react to the unpredictable nature of close-quarters racing. This lack of "driveability" has become a primary area of focus for the project as it moves into its next phase under the leadership of Mattia Binotto.

The FIA ADUO Safety Net and the "Lost Month"

A central concern for the Audi project is the FIA’s Assisted Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) scheme, designed to help manufacturers who fall behind the performance curve of the 2026 regulations. The first assessment for this assistance was originally scheduled after the sixth race of the season. However, following the cancellations of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, the sixth race will not occur until the Monaco Grand Prix in June. Wheatley cautioned that no manufacturer "wants to lose a month" of potential upgrade data, suggesting that the delay in the ADUO checkpoint could hinder the ability of struggling teams to bridge the gap to the front-runners.

Reliability Woes and the "Ambitious" 2026 Regulations

While Audi has shown flashes of potential, including a points finish in Australia, the team has been plagued by severe reliability issues that have prevented several starts. In both Shanghai and Melbourne, mechanical failures during the reconnaissance laps left the team with a reduced presence on the grid. Wheatley compared the current technical struggle to the introduction of the V6-hybrid engines in 2014, describing the 2026 rules as "ambitious" and highly complex. This complexity has not only affected Audi; teams like McLaren and Williams also suffered multiple DNS (Did Not Start) results in China, indicating a grid-wide struggle to master the new electrical and combustion integration.
