Coordinated Search and Rescue in Bassa
A joint tactical operation involving military personnel from Operation Safe Haven and local vigilante groups has concluded with the recovery of a missing herder in Plateau State. The search was concentrated within the Ariri and Kwasha communities of the Bassa Local Government Area following a formal report of the individual's disappearance on April 13. Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed that the coordinated efforts led to the discovery of the herder’s remains in the rugged terrain of the affected areas. While the mission was initially categorized as a search and rescue, it transitioned into a recovery operation as security teams navigated the volatile border zones between the two communities.
Recovery of Rustled Livestock
In addition to the recovery of the deceased herder, security forces managed to track and retrieve a significant number of cattle that had been displaced during the incident. A total of 32 live cattle were recovered from the vicinity and safely moved back to a secure location. However, three cattle were discovered dead at the scene, likely as a result of the initial confrontation or the subsequent movement through difficult terrain. The successful retrieval of the majority of the herd is seen as a vital step in de-escalating local tensions, which often flare following the loss of valuable livestock in the region.
Community Engagement and Handover
Following the conclusion of the field operations, the recovered remains of the herder and the surviving livestock were formally handed over to leaders of the local herding community. This process was facilitated by military commanders to ensure transparency and to support the community in their mourning and recovery efforts. The handover serves as a mechanical necessity to document the losses and ensure that the remaining property is returned to the rightful families. Leaders within the Bassa local government have been urged to maintain communication with security agencies to prevent retaliatory actions that could further destabilize the area.
