Emergency deliberations at Palazzo Chigi

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defense Minister Guido Crosetto at Palazzo Chigi to evaluate Italy's military response to the widening Middle East crisis. The meeting focused specifically on the vulnerability of Cyprus, which Italian officials consider exposed to the direct consequences of the conflict. The government is reviewing measures to support regional allies and safeguard European economic interests in the face of persistent missile and drone threats.

Naval assets under consideration

The Italian government is weighing the deployment of a FREMM-class frigate to the waters surrounding Cyprus. These warships are equipped with sophisticated radar systems capable of detecting threats within a 200-kilometer radius and carry Aster 30 missiles for long-range air defense. Alternatively, the deployment of the destroyer Caio Duilio is being discussed. Known for its powerful radar and air defense capabilities extending up to 350 kilometers, the Caio Duilio would provide a significant shield against ballistic and cruise missile threats.

Protection of maritime and energy corridors

A primary objective of the proposed naval mission is the protection of commercial shipping and energy flows. Rome has expressed deep concern regarding potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Mediterranean, which could trigger a sharp rise in oil and gas prices. The Italian Navy's 76mm rapid-fire guns are seen as a critical tool in this effort, as they have proven highly effective at neutralizing drones, which have become a signature weapon in the current conflict.
