Clandestine Meeting Thwarted by Security Services
State prosecutors revealed on Monday that a 19-year-old Israeli citizen, identified as Sagi Haik, had progressed beyond digital communication to plan a physical meeting with an Iranian intelligence operative. According to the indictment filed in the Lod-Central District Court, Haik purchased a plane ticket to Dubai with the explicit intent of meeting his handler for further instructions. Authorities successfully intercepted the defendant before the scheduled departure, terminating a months-long recruitment cycle that began on social media.
Exploitation of Family Military Connections
The core of the espionage allegations involves the defendant’s betrayal of his own family members for financial gain. Prosecutors assert that Haik provided his handler with the personal details and identification of his brother, an active-duty soldier in the Israel Defense Forces. To increase his perceived value to the Iranian agent, Haik allegedly fabricated his brother’s military role, claiming he served in the prestigious Military Intelligence Directorate and possessed access to highly classified strategic data.
Fabrication of US-Israeli Attack Plans
In an effort to secure higher payments, Haik reportedly conspired with a second defendant, 21-year-old Assaf Shitrit, to produce "high-value" disinformation. The pair allegedly utilized AI tools to forge an official-looking document detailing a fictionalized joint military offensive by the United States and Israel against Iranian nuclear sites. Prosecutors argued in court that the transfer of such false intelligence was "highly dangerous," as it could have inadvertently triggered a preemptive "surprise attack" by the Islamic Republic based on the misinformation.
