The "Professional Alarm" vs. Political Survival

In a closed-door Security Cabinet meeting, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir painted a grim picture of an army stretched to its breaking point. With over 100,000 reservists currently deployed—many on their sixth or seventh rotations since October 2023—Zamir signaled that the IDF no longer has the resources to meet its expanding missions. The military is currently maintaining four divisions in southern Lebanon, holding approximately half of the Gaza Strip, and deploying massive forces to the West Bank to contain escalating violence. According to military spokesperson Effie Defrin, the army urgently needs 7,000 to 8,000 additional combat soldiers just to maintain current operations.

The Haredi Draft: A Coalition at a Crossroads

The manpower crisis has reignited the decades-old debate over the military exemption for Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Jews, who make up 13% of the population. Despite a June 2024 Supreme Court ruling that the Haredi must be drafted, Prime Minister Netanyahu has stalled on a formal recruitment bill to preserve his governing coalition with religious parties Shas and United Torah Judaism. These parties are pushing for a "draft evasion law" to permanently cement exemptions for seminary students. Analysts suggest that Netanyahu is caught between the "burden of war" demanded by the secular public and the political necessity of his religious partners.

Opposition Outcry: "A Security Catastrophe"

Opposition leader Yair Lapid characterized Zamir's warning as the most severe he has witnessed in his 13 years on security committees. "The government is sending the army into a multi-front war with no strategy, no resources, and too few soldiers," Lapid stated, accusing Netanyahu of prioritizing coalition stability over national security. Similarly, Yair Golan, leader of the Democratic Party and former deputy chief of staff, described the warning as a "massive black flag," arguing that a government that encourages draft evasion while expanding West Bank outposts is effectively abandoning the state's security.
