Execution of the charter operation

Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Home Affairs, and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan, confirmed the completion of a specialized charter flight to South Africa on Sunday. The aircraft, carrying 54 adults and nine children, departed Dublin Airport at 17h05 on Saturday, February 28, and arrived in Johannesburg shortly after 04h00 on March 1. This mission represents the second charter operation conducted by the state in 2026 and the eighth since Ireland resumed the use of charter flights for removals and deportations in 2025.

Personnel and monitoring protocols

To ensure the safety and legal integrity of the removal process, the returnees were accompanied by a multi disciplinary team. This group included members of An Garda Síochána, specialized medical staff, an interpreter, and an independent human rights observer. The presence of these officials is part of the standard protocol for charter removals, intended to manage the well being of the passengers while fulfilling the state's legal mandates for the enforcement of deportation orders.

Criminality and parallel policing operations

Among the adults removed during this operation, ten individuals held prior criminal convictions within the Irish judicial system. Their offenses ranged from domestic violence to involvement in drug trafficking. The Department of Justice noted that these removals align with ongoing domestic policing efforts, including Operation Tara, which targets organized drug networks, and Operation Moonridge, a specialized initiative focused on the management of sex offenders.
